Lugsail Update – Treasury Data

Lugsail now connects up to the U.S. Treasury API

I’ve been trying to be selective about the APIs added to Lugsail in an effort to get build out the basics while providing useful – and usable – datasets to experiment with.

So today, I’ve added in an API link to the US Treasury datasets for importing the following:

  • Debt to penny
  • Treasury General Account cash balance
  • Average interest rates (filterable by a variety of subsets)

Testing it out this morning, but here’s a quick lugsail line chart.

I’m being selective about what gets added so it’s not just a sprawling mess of datasets, but some next options direct from the Treasury are:

Connector options (& why?):

  1. Monthly Treasury Statement — Federal receipts, outlays, surplus/deficit, and spending/revenue categories, by month

  2. Daily Treasury Statement — Cash inflows/outflows, tax deposits, refunds, public-debt transactions, and short-term investments

  3. Treasury securities auctions — Auction amounts, yields/rates, terms, maturity dates, and bid metrics

  4. Monthly Statement of the Public Debt — Debt composition by security type/class, marketable vs. nonmarketable debt, and debt-limit context

  5. Historical Debt Outstanding — Annual national debt back to 1789 (long-run time series)

  6. State unemployment-fund advances — State-by-state borrowing, balances, and interest rates

  7. Financial Report of the U.S. Government — Annual revenue, costs, assets, liabilities, and agency-level financial statements
